Gifted and Talented

GIFTED AND TALENTED SERVICES

The gifted program provides screening, identification, and programs for exceptional children who demonstrate abilities that give evidence of high performance in academic and intellectual aptitude.

The talented program seeks to screen, identify, and provide services for children who possess unique talent in the visual or performing arts.

SCREENING FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED

While the parents or the regular education teacher may ask for an evaluation for students suspected of meeting the definition of gifted or talented, the student must pass the appropriate screening procedures before a formal evaluation will be conducted.

Gifted:
Students are screened by the teacher on a rating form of characteristics of gifted students. In addition, a review of current progress monitoring data in ELA and Math are considered as part of the screening process along with an intellectual screening tool. Students whose scores meet a cut-off score on these screening instruments will be referred for a formal evaluation.

Talented:
Students are screened by the teacher on a rating form of characteristics of talented students in the appropriate area (visual arts, music, or theatre). An additional review of artwork or recordings of performances may also be submitted for review. Students whose scores meet a cut-off score on the screening instrument will be referred for a formal evaluation

If you believe your child may be gifted or talented, please reach out to your school's SBLC chairperson for further guidance. You may also contact the special services department for help with referring your child for screening or complete the child find form.

EVALUATION

A gifted evaluation consists of the administration of psychological and achievement tests required by state mandate. Students must score above a cut-off threshold to qualify for services.

A talented evaluation consists of appropriate measures for the area being assessed: written tests, drawing tests, musical performance, theatre performance, and/or interviews with evaluators.

SERVICE DELIVERY MODELS

The continuum for gifted and talented students include: regular classroom with supplemental aids and services, a resource center or class, a self contained class and preschool services. At the IEP meeting the school system's representative and the parent determines what program bests meets the needs of the child as indicated by the evaluation report.
